Arctic Umiaq Line CEO Taitsianguaq Olsen tells KNR he is pleased with the extension, which maintains the weekly route between Qaqortoq and Ilulissat.
KNR previously reported that the 34-year-old vessel is outdated and will eventually need replacement—something the company cannot afford, as a new ship would take at least 15 years to finance and build.
Naalakkersuisut says future decisions must take upcoming changes, including new airports, into account. Minister Aqqaluaq B. Egede (IA) highlights the ship’s importance, telling KNR that Sarfaq Ittuk has long provided affordable transport and helped maintain cohesion across Greenland.
