Egede<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, announces on behalf of Naalakkersuisut that a service contract has been signed with\u202f<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Arctic Umiaq Line<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202ffor passenger transport with the coastal ship\u202f<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sarfaq Ittuk<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202ffor\u202f<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2026 and 2027<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Statement from the Government of Greenland<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Minister\u202f<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Aqqaluaq B. Egede<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202fsays:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI am pleased that, in collaboration with Arctic Umiaq Line, we have successfully extended coastal passenger services with Sarfaq Ittuk through the end of 2027. Sarfaq Ittuk holds historical significance in Greenland, providing connectivity and affordable passenger transport over many years, benefiting both the local community and visiting tourists.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Under the new service contract,\u202f<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sarfaq Ittuk<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202fwill continue its regular sailing schedule with\u202f<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">weekly trips<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202fto the following destinations: Nuuk, Maniitsoq, Kangaamiut, Sisimiut, Aasiaat, Qeqertarsuaq, Ilulissat, Qeqertarsuatsiaat, Paamiut, Arsuk, Qaqortoq, and Narsaq.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Statement from Arctic Umiaq Line<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Managing Director of Arctic Umiaq Line,\u202f<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Taitsianguaq Olsen<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, comments:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe are pleased that our service contract with the Greenlandic Self-Government has been extended for two years. This ensures that coastal passenger transport with Sarfaq Ittuk will continue in 2026 and 2027, providing weekly service between Qaqortoq and Ilulissat, meeting our customers\u2019 demand.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Planning for Future Transport Changes<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">With the opening of new airports in\u202f<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Qaqortoq and Ilulissat in 2026<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, travel patterns across Greenland are expected to change, affecting air, sea, and coastal travel.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">An agreement has therefore been reached between the Department and Arctic Umiaq Line: once sufficient understanding of new travel patterns has been achieved,\u202f<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Government of Greenland<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202fwill make decisions on the future organisation of coastal passenger services. He was\u202f<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">69 years old<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mikael Petersen served as\u202f<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Minister for Social Affairs, Labour Market and Public Works<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202ffrom 1997 to 1999. Later, from 2002 to 2004, he held the position of\u202f<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Minister for Housing, Resources and Environment<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">After his ministerial roles, Mikael Petersen kept up his political work in Greenland, serving as\u202f<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Secretary General of Siumut<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202fand later as\u202f<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Party Secretary for the Naleraq Party<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. He will be remembered for his extensive experience and significant contributions to the political development of Greenland.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Our thoughts are with Mikael Petersen\u2019s\u202f<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">wife, children, and grandchildren<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, to whom we extend our deepest condolences.\u202f<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">May Mikael Petersen's memory be honoured.<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Jens-Frederik Nielsen<\/span><\/b><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Chairman of the Government of Greenland<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Government of Greenland Condemns Violence Against Women and Girls and Strengthens Efforts Against Sexual Exploitation<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Issued by:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202fDepartment of Business, Resources, Energy, Justice, and Gender Equality<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On the occasion of\u202f<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">UN International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the Government of Greenland reaffirms its\u202f<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">unequivocal stance against the violence<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202fthat many women and young girls continue to experience in Greenlandic society.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Violence in all its forms\u2014physical, psychological, or digital\u2014is unacceptable. In recent years, Naalakkersuisut has\u202f<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">enhanced legislation<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202fto criminalise digital grooming, stalking, and psychological abuse.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Government of Greenland continues to review whether current laws provide\u202f<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">adequate protection for children and young people against abuse<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. As part of this work, a review has been launched to assess whether existing provisions on the age of sexual consent sufficiently protect young people from sexual exploitation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Currently, the law states that sexual activity with a person under 15 is considered rape if the partner is 22 years or older\u2014even if consent is given. However, sexual activity is legally permitted if the younger person is above the age of consent, regardless of age differences. This means, for example, that a 15-year-old can legally engage in a relationship with someone who is 30 or even 50 years old, as long as they consent.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In recent years, there have been several cases where older individuals have had relationships with very young people over 15\u2014who are technically above the age of consent\u2014but who are\u202f<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">still in school and not legally mature<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Minister Naaja H. Nathanielsen<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202fcommented:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cMost of us would agree that a five-year age gap is too large when it comes to young people who are still in school. I do not believe there can be equality in a sexual relationship between a 16-year-old girl and a 21- or 30-year-old man\u2014regardless of maturity. An adult should not be in a relationship with a ninth-grade student. Our youth should be able to explore their sexuality with peers without risk of exploitation by adults who should know better. I believe it is time for an additional layer of protection, such as a legal limit on the permissible age difference until the young person turns 17. The goal is not to restrict young people, but to protect vulnerable youth from being exploited.
