Major budget shift to boost healthcare in Greenland Government reallocates funds and launches review of healthcare finances

The Greenlandic Finance and Tax Committee has approved a plan to free up 66 million DKK for the healthcare system in 2025, alongside a review of financial management.

Key points (Sermitsiaq):

  • 66 million DKK reallocated to healthcare from other projects and accounts.
  • Major cuts include:
    • 12.8 million DKK from municipal block grants
    • 9 million DKK from a children and youth activity centre in Kullorsuaq
    • 5.7 million DKK from sports hall renovations
    • 21.8 million DKK from staff housing construction in Nuuk
  • 2.5 million DKK set aside for a management review of healthcare finances.
  • Recurring issue: healthcare consistently requires more funding than originally allocated, largely due to costs for temporary staff.
  • The Finance and Tax Committee requests that the review results be shared with the Audit Committee.
This move aims to ensure the healthcare system is better funded while improving oversight of spending.
