KNR: Sarfaq Ittuk secured for two more years

According to KNR, the Government of Greenland has signed a new service contract with Arctic Umiaq Line, ensuring that the coastal ship Sarfaq Ittuk will continue operating through 2026 and 2027.

Arctic Umiaq Line Chief Executive Officer Taitsianguaq Olsen tells KNR he is pleased with the extension, which maintains the weekly route between Qaqortoq and Ilulissat.

KNR previously reported that the 34-year-old vessel is outdated and will eventually need replacement—something the company cannot afford, as a new ship would take at least 15 years to finance and build.

The Government of Greenland says future decisions must take upcoming changes, including new airports, into account. Minister Aqqaluaq B. Egede (IA) highlights the ship’s importance, telling KNR that Sarfaq Ittuk has long provided affordable transport and helped maintain cohesion across Greenland.
