Atassut Puts Forward New Member for Naalakkersuisut, Sermitsiaq Reports

16 december 2025

According to Sermitsiaq, the political party Atassut has decided to put forward Maritha Broberg as a new member of Naalakkersuisut, following the resignation of Bentiaraq Ottosen earlier this autumn.

Sermitsiaq reports that the decision was made by Atassut’s party board and announced in a brief statement on the party’s Facebook page. Broberg is currently a member of the municipal council in Qeqertalik, where she serves as Atassut’s sole representative.

As reported by Sermitsiaq, Maritha Broberg ran in the spring elections for both Inatsisartut and the municipal council. While she was not elected to Inatsisartut, she appears on Atassut’s list of parliamentary substitutes.

Approval Required by Inatsisartut

Sermitsiaq notes that Bentiaraq Ottosen stepped down from Naalakkersuisut in November following a case involving missing funding for a project related to a new job portal. At the time of his resignation, Ottosen was responsible for social affairs, labour market issues, internal affairs, and environmental matters.

These responsibilities are currently being handled by other members of Naalakkersuisut. According to Sermitsiaq, it has not yet been announced whether Maritha Broberg will assume the same portfolio areas.

Before she can formally take up the position, Broberg must be approved by Inatsisartut. Sermitsiaq reports that this is expected to take place when parliament reconvenes on 3 February, in order to conclude the autumn session.

Another Change in Naalakkersuisut

Sermitsiaq further reports that Inatsisartut is also expected to approve the resignation of another Naalakkersuisut member on 3 February. Mads Pedersen (Inuit Ataqatigiit) has requested to step down, a request that has already been accepted by the Chair of Naalakkersuisut.

However, as Sermitsiaq explains, under Greenlandic law a member cannot formally leave Naalakkersuisut until the resignation has been approved by Inatsisartut. It has not yet been announced who will replace Mads Pedersen.

In the meantime, Sermitsiaq reports that Chair of Naalakkersuisut Jens-Frederik Nielsen has taken over Mads Pedersen’s portfolio areas, which include children, youth, families, and internal affairs.
