Greenlandic Member of Parliament Aki-Matilda Høegh-Dam raised questions about defence negotiations between Denmark and Greenland during a question time session in the Danish Parliament. KNR, Greenland’s national broadcaster, reports on its website knr.gl.
Høegh-Dam asked Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen about the process leading up to the Arctic defence agreement, including the level of involvement of Greenlandic political institutions and the public.
The defence minister responded that the Government of Greenland had been closely involved in the negotiations, which were conducted at government level. He declined to comment on confidential discussions but stated that political debate on defence and security policy is not restricted.
The negotiations have also prompted internal discussions in Greenland, where concerns have been raised about communication and information-sharing during the process, according to KNR.
