New Municipal Budget Targets Development in East Greenland

The budget includes stronger local governance, with plans to appoint a town manager and an operations manager, as well as a new study focused on developing the local hunting economy. Additional initiatives include a local business forum, senior housing, youth facilities, and cultural projects.

Mayor Avaaraq Olsen told KNR that work will begin as soon as possible due to limited shipping access.

“We need to get started as soon as possible. Ship arrivals are very limited, so planning has to happen early,” Olsen said.

KNR reports that the municipality is also considering upgrades to the old factory’s freezer facilities, which could allow hunters to process and sell products such as musk ox meat to other parts of Greenland.

Food safety concerns remain part of the discussion. A 2023 study cited by KNR found high levels of PFAS chemicals in residents due to traditional diets. Asked whether this would affect exports, Olsen said:

“The study will show what we need to be aware of.”

Air connectivity remains a major challenge. KNR reports that local residents are calling for the return of a key flight route linking Kulusuk, Nerlerit Inaat, and Nuuk. While Naalakkersuisut has announced funding for a future runway in Ittoqqortoormiit, Olsen told KNR:

“We will be involved once there is something more concrete.”
