Maniitsoq is taking a major step forward in the development of its port infrastructure as the fully renovated Atlantic harbour facility, equipped with modern port infrastructure, is scheduled to be handed over on 15 December 2025. Following the handover, only minor finishing works will remain before the project is officially completed in early summer 2026.
The reopening of the Atlantic harbour in May 2026 will mark a significant milestone for the municipality, local businesses, and Maniitsoq’s maritime connections to the rest of Greenland.
Naalakkersuisoq for Social Affairs, Labour Market, Housing, Infrastructure and Outer Districts, Aqqaluaq B. Egede, states:
“The complete renovation of the Atlantic harbour is an important upgrade for Maniitsoq and for maritime infrastructure in the region. I am very pleased with the strong cooperation among all parties involved, which has ensured both a rapid implementation of the project and the continued supply of goods during the renovation period.”
The upgraded harbour will provide improved conditions for cargo and passenger handling, support economic growth, and contribute to a more robust and reliable supply chain. The modern infrastructure is expected to strengthen Maniitsoq’s role as a key maritime hub and improve connectivity with the rest of the country.
The renovation project has been characterized by close and effective collaboration between KJ Construction, Royal Arctic Line, Royal Greenland, and other local stakeholders. All parties have contributed coordinated efforts to ensure that Maniitsoq receives a modern harbour facility with high capacity, enhanced functionality, and future-proofed infrastructure. Despite the limitations caused by the construction work, the city’s supply chains have been successfully maintained throughout the renovation period.
The reopening of the Atlantic harbour in May 2026 is considered a special occasion, and the Naalakkersuisoq has expressed his anticipation of participating in and officially inaugurating the completed facility.
